2. Redemption Song – Bob Marley

This song is not a protest tune per se, but it is a powerfully unifying song which addresses the subject of freedom. It discusses the concept of mental slavery and how our thoughts present barriers to lasting social change. Bono of U2, who is heavily involved with social activism, mentioned that he never meets with political leaders without playing Marley’s “Redemption Song” for them. Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash have fittingly covered this tune. This duet of two socially conscious icons was released shortly after both had died.
