I’ve noticed something over the years: it’s not the promises people make that stay with us — it’s the moments they actually follow through.

I once had a colleague who never made a show of loyalty or friendship. She didn’t sprinkle her sentences with “You can count on me” or “I’ve got your back.” But the day my car broke down on the edge of town, she was there without me asking, jumper cables in hand, smiling like it was no trouble at all. I don’t remember a single promise she made. I remember that.

The reverse is also true. I’ve met people who speak in generous declarations — “We’ll do lunch soon,” “I’ll help you with that,” “I’m here for you.” Some even say it with conviction,...
