Life has taught me that choices and consequences are inseparable companions.

I've also learned something equally important.

Good choices do not guarantee good outcomes.

The writer of Ecclesiastes observed that "the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong," concluding that "time and chance happen to them all." I have always appreciated the honesty of those words. We can make thoughtful decisions and still encounter bad luck. We can do everything right and still watch events unfold in ways we never imagined.

That uncertainty makes decision-making difficult.

Recently, I read a short piece by Vi Wickam that contained one sentence I haven't been able to shake.

"Not every choice is a decision."
