Eleanor had never noticed before how silent dinner at her house was. For long stretches, no one made any noise at all except for the soft clink of flatware on plates.
Then Mom would ask something like, “How did the meeting with GenM go?”
Dad would nod. “Quite well. And your monthly wrap up?”
“About normal.”
Then they’d lapse back into silence.
“Is there anything new with you girls?” Dad asked after one of the longer periods without conversation.
“Besides us both starting new internships?” Eleanor said.
“Both of you?” Dad’s brow wrinkled. “I knew about Mandy’s acceptance as a GenM trainee, but I didn’t see anything about an internship for you.”
