Lu needed someone to talk to. Someone different to talk to, that is. Back on Hope she would have sought out one of her friends or maybe even a cousin—but her only friend here was Tori, and Tori was too busy keeping them all alive to talk, even if she were the kind of person to sit down and talk about nothing in particular, which she wasn’t.

Brian would probably be offended if he knew Lu considered Tori her only friend on the ship. But Brian had never been a friend, exactly—just a boyfriend. And they didn’t talk when they were together. Or they didn’t use to. But now?

Lu guessed they talked some. But she wasn’t sure a conversation with Brian was exactly what she was looking for.
