Mr. Yi stared at her, and she  felt a wave of disappointment from him.

“Yes, my family was from China way back. Some of them speak some Chinese. I can speak a little, but I can’t read. I didn’t think it would ever be useful.”

Mr. Yi sighed. “I maybe have something in English. Xiao Gao and Tori make a story. They send it to me to read sometimes. I find.”

He scuttled away, as he often did when one of them was around, but this time, as he reached the turn in the corridor, he stopped. “You coming?”
