Gabe rolled his eyes. “Brian, shut up about the knife already, would you? What else was she going to use?”

Lu came into view around the bend in the corridor. “Did you find her, Brian?”

“I’m here,” Tori said.

“What were you thinking, taking off like that? You’re barely stable on your feet, and you haven’t eaten anything in days.”

That was news to Gabe. “I thought she was getting nutrition from those IV fluids.”

Brian laughed. “Like that’s the same as eating. Come on, Tori. Plenty of time to apologize to us all and then save the world after lunch. Brian reached toward Tori with his right hand, the one not holding a tray, but she flinched away from him.

Gabe felt perversely pleased...
