Hope’s next round of attacks wasn’t at all what Tori was expecting. There was no code at all involved, just news articles and blog posts.

One of them quoted her mother as saying her death was a relief, really—there was no way the family could afford the extra mouth to feed right now—they had babies starving as it was.

Tori turned the screen off and pushed back from her console. A lone tear traced its way down her cheek. She pretended to ignore it.

She knew things were tight at home, and for sure cousin Trina’s baby had come too soon, without proper permits, and was straining everyone’s resources. Probably it was a relief not to have to feed her, too.

Though Tori more than made up for the resources she took, didn’t she?
