Lexi spent two more days in Louisville. Her grandmother accompanied her on several strolls around the property and prodded her to open up about anything bothering her. She could never admit what Cooper had cost them both. The coaxing for her to consider Jesse as her next husband did not go unnoticed.

Maggie sent a telegram a few weeks later about her intentions to travel to Bardstown. When she arrived for her visit, nothing had changed. Wesley came to the house to eat dinner with the family that evening. Her grandmother interrogated him before the meal began.

“Mr. Dalton, can I ask you why you insist on courting Lexi?”

“Lexi is the most beautiful woman in town. Any man would be lucky to have her as his wife.”
