         “Fresh air…. Hmmmmmm…” she pondered.

I tried very hard to be patient with her.

         “Yeah. That sounds good. Let’s fresh some air,” she slurred.

I attempted to smile at her reassuringly, but it likely came off as worried and pathetic. No matter, she was already distracted by something else, and together we headed towards the entry point of the sandbar.

 

After many stumbles and increasingly irritating giggles from Jess, we finally arrived near the mysterious pathway. To my surprise, I saw someone standing alone, gazing out at the sandbar. I squinted through the squiggling heat waves to see who it was.
