Right now, as you are reading this, I'm sitting in the Javits Center doing something awesome at New York Comic Con. Every time I go back to New York, I'm astounded anew at how much the city had changed. It's not the city I grew up in, not anymore. And while that's nice for corporations and white people, I don't know that the city is really a better place for it.
Of course, things were not sunshine and roses back then. Life was hard. New York was hard. It was full of crime and darkness.
There was a time when one could take the subway over the Manhattan Bridge and be able to peer into real, live sweatshops. Like honest to goddess ethic women bent over reams of fabric, literally with needles and threads in their hands. The old tenement buildings in which these women toiled...
