“Thank you for agreeing to talk to us, Carol,” Dave Wilson said. “We know this must be difficult. If you like, we can have a WPC present.”

Carol Russell shook her head.

“No,” she said. “Just you’s fine.”

“Coffee?” Wilson asked. “Cigarette?”

She shook her head again, more emphatically at the cigarette.

“All right,” he said. “Let’s start with Elizabeth. With Liz.”

Carol’s fingers twisted in her lap.

“It was last Friday,” she said. “Friday the thirteenth. Not that it bothered Liz. She said it was just another day. We’re—were—best mates as well as sisters. We’re in the sixth form together.”
