Josie’s words hung in the corridor like frost.
He’s still here.
He never left the house.
For a moment, everything inside Grimshaw Hall stopped—breaths, thoughts, the air itself. Even the old walls seemed to creak differently, as if listening.
Riggs recovered first.
“Who’s ‘he’?” he asked gently, coming up the final steps behind Georgie.
“Josie—who do you mean?”
But Josie only pressed herself tighter against Samson’s side, eyes darting wildly at every shadow.
Samson stroked her hair, voice soft but shaking.
“It’s all right, sweetheart. No one will hurt you now. Just tell us who you saw.”
Josie trembled so violently Georgie thought she might collapse again.
