When we arrived back at Holyrood, found Lord James and informed him of what had happened. I found his reaction surprising. Instead of summoning soldiers, and going off to rescue his sister, he seemed instead to plan to leave her to her fate.

"Are you sure he took her away by force?" he asked. "It does not seem likely."

"I was there, my Lord. I saw what happened."

"Perhaps you are mistaken. Tell me again what happened."

"As you know, my Lord, we were returning to Edinburgh from Linlithgow," I began. "The Queen had been upset by recent events and had wished to leave the city for a while, but it was time to return to Holyrood."

"The events that were of her own making," he said softly. "Please, carry on."
