most angry. It chilled her, and she went faster, taking the steps two at a time, heedless of the possibility of losing her footing and tumbling the rest of the way to the bottom.

When she finally reached the ground floor and burst through the fire door, she didn’t stop, just continued to run until she reached the main entrance. Her eyes darted left and right as she ran, but the hallway was empty. It was as if she and John were the only people alive, and the building and surrounding campus were just a stage for them to play out this nightmare.

She didn’t dare slow down enough to look behind her, but the cold hand which gripped her arm just after she opened the main door didn’t surprise her enough to stop a scream. She hoped the sound would bring people out of nearby offices, b...
