After leaving the bank, Tom bought a used, red, sport utility vehicle with black leather seats, GPS, and a satellite phone, haggling the price down several thousand dollars. As he drove the car off the lot, he made use of the vehicle’s phone to call Clayton, who gave him the address of his office in Fowler and invited him to come up.

Ninety minutes of driving in a drizzling rain brought Tom to the two-story medical office building where Clayton saw his patients. He parked his SUV in the closest available space and stepped out into the icy rain.
