Charlotte Ashby was a widow and was very excited to have Mary and the girls in her home, even if it was because of an impending battle. She immediately had baths drawn for the girls and allowed them to soak in the lavender scented water until dinner time.

     As everyone gathered in the parlor to await dinner, a maid came in with a very dirty, raggedy man behind her. Allie was shocked when Mrs. Ashby ran to him and offered her hand. “General Marion, to what do I owe the honor of this visit?”

     “I just wanted to warn you that there may be trouble hereabouts and to make sure that you are prepared. I have posted some men at Pond Bluff and I will have them keep an eye here too.”
